# Personality Disorder Treatment in Florida

Personality disorders can affect the way you understand yourself, relate to other people, manage emotions, and respond to everyday situations.

Because these patterns can become deeply ingrained, they may create ongoing challenges in relationships, work, and other areas of life.

But personality disorders are also treatable. At Mark Behavioral Health, we provide personalized personality disorder treatment in Florida to help adults understand unhealthy patterns, develop new coping skills, and improve their emotional well-being.

## What Are Personality Disorders?

Personality disorders are a group of [mental health conditions](https://markbehavioral.com/mental-health-disorders/) involving long-lasting patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differ significantly from what is expected within a person’s culture.

These patterns may affect how you view yourself, interpret other people’s actions, manage emotions, control impulses, or maintain relationships. They often begin by adolescence or early adulthood and can continue causing difficulties over time.

There are 10 recognized personality disorders. Because each has different characteristics, two people diagnosed with a personality disorder may have very different symptoms and treatment needs.

## What Causes Personality Disorders?

There isn’t one known cause of personality disorders.

Researchers believe that a combination of genetic, developmental, and environmental factors may influence their development. Your experiences and individual circumstances can also affect how personality traits develop over time.

**Factors that may contribute include:**

- Family history of personality disorders or other mental health conditions

- Childhood abuse or neglect

- Unstable or stressful childhood environments

- Other [traumatic experiences](https://markbehavioral.com/mental-health-disorders/trauma/)

- Individual differences in brain development or function

- Learned ways of responding to emotions and relationships

Having one or more risk factors doesn’t mean you’ll develop a personality disorder. These conditions are complex, and their development varies from person to person.

## Types of Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are traditionally organized into three groups, or clusters, based on similar characteristics.

### Cluster A Personality Disorders

Cluster A disorders are associated with patterns of thinking or behaving that may appear unusual or detached.

**They include:**

- **Paranoid personality disorder:** Persistent distrust and suspicion of other people's motives

- **Schizoid personality disorder:** Limited interest in close relationships and a tendency toward social detachment

- **Schizotypal personality disorder:** Unusual beliefs, behaviors, speech, or perceptions combined with difficulty forming close relationships

### Cluster B Personality Disorders

Cluster B disorders commonly involve difficulties with emotional regulation, impulsivity, relationships, or unpredictable behavior.

**They include:**

- **Antisocial personality disorder:** Disregard for other people’s rights, rules, or social norms

- **Borderline personality disorder (BPD):** Difficulty regulating emotions, maintaining a stable sense of self, and navigating relationships

- **Histrionic personality disorder:** Patterns of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking behavior

- **Narcissistic personality disorder:** Patterns involving an excessive need for admiration, difficulty with empathy, and an inflated sense of self-importance

### Cluster C Personality Disorders

Cluster C disorders generally involve significant anxiety or fear.

**They include:**

- **Avoidant personality disorder:** Extreme sensitivity to rejection or criticism combined with social inhibition

- **Dependent personality disorder:** Excessive reliance on others and difficulty making independent decisions

- **Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD):** Persistent preoccupation with perfectionism, order, rules, and control

OCPD is different from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although their names sound similar, they are separate mental health conditions with different diagnostic criteria.

## Signs and Symptoms of Personality Disorders

Symptoms vary considerably depending on the specific personality disorder.

Some people recognize that certain patterns are creating problems in their lives. Others may have difficulty recognizing their behaviors or beliefs as unusual, particularly when those patterns have been present for many years.

**Possible signs of a personality disorder include:**

- Difficulty maintaining healthy relationships

- Intense or unstable emotions

- Problems trusting other people

- Impulsive behaviors

- Frequent relationship conflicts

- Difficulty adapting to change

- Unhealthy patterns of thinking about yourself or others

- Difficulty managing anger

- Strong fear of rejection or abandonment

- Social withdrawal

- Problems controlling impulses

- Difficulty understanding how your behavior affects others

Having some of these traits doesn't necessarily mean you have a personality disorder. A mental health professional can evaluate the duration, severity, and effects of your symptoms to make an accurate diagnosis.

## How Personality Disorders Can Affect Daily Life

Personality disorders can influence nearly every area of life because they affect the ways you think, feel, behave, and interact with other people.

Relationship difficulties are common. You might struggle with trust, fear rejection, experience intense conflicts, withdraw from others, or have difficulty maintaining stable connections.

Symptoms can also interfere with work, school, finances, decision-making, and your sense of identity or self-worth.

Some people with personality disorders also experience [depression](https://markbehavioral.com/mental-health-disorders/depressive-disorders/), anxiety, trauma-related conditions, or substance use disorders.

Treating co-occurring concerns alongside the personality disorder can be an important part of improving overall mental health.

## Personality Disorder Treatment at Mark Behavioral Health

Personality patterns develop over time, so changing them doesn’t happen overnight. However, treatment can help you become more aware of these patterns and practice healthier ways of responding to emotions, relationships, and difficult situations.

At Mark Behavioral Health, your treatment plan is personalized according to your diagnosis, symptoms, goals, and any co-occurring mental health concerns.

### Residential Mental Health Treatment

Our [residential mental health treatment program](https://markbehavioral.com/service/residential-treatment-program-florida/) provides a structured environment where you can focus on your mental health away from everyday pressures.

Living on-site gives you consistent access to therapy, support, and opportunities to practice new emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal skills throughout your day.

Residential care may be particularly helpful when symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning or when outpatient treatment hasn't provided enough support.

### Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

[Cognitive behavioral therapy](https://markbehavioral.com/service/cognitive-behavioral-therapy/) focuses on connections between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

CBT can help you identify deeply established thought patterns and examine how they influence your reactions. You can then practice new ways of interpreting situations and responding to challenges.

### Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

[Dialectical behavior therapy](https://markbehavioral.com/service/dialectical-behavior-therapy/) teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions and responding to distress without automatically acting on impulses.

DBT focuses on areas such as emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. It is particularly well established as a treatment for borderline personality disorder.

### Individual and Group Therapy

Individual therapy gives you a private space to examine patterns in your emotions, behaviors, and relationships while working toward personal treatment goals.

Group therapy provides opportunities to practice communication, receive feedback, learn from others, and develop healthier interpersonal skills within a supportive setting.

### Medication Management

Medication doesn’t directly treat or cure personality disorders. However, medications may sometimes be used to address specific symptoms or co-occurring conditions such as depression or anxiety.

Our psychiatric providers can evaluate your symptoms, [review your medications](https://markbehavioral.com/service/medication-management/), and monitor your response as part of a broader treatment plan.
