For many eligible beneficiaries — spouses, surviving spouses, or children of veterans — navigating mental health care can feel overwhelming.

But if you’re in Florida and eligible for CHAMPVA (the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs), help is within reach.

At Mark Behavioral Health, we work with CHAMPVA mental health insurance coverage and benefits to give you the health care services that you need.

About CHAMPVA Coverage for Inpatient Mental Health Treatment in Florida

CHAMPVA is a health care program offering insurance benefits to family members of veterans with service-connected disability or those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

It’s separate from TRICARE, which serves service members and active-duty families, though both are VA-administered. CHAMPVA provides comprehensive health care benefits, covering inpatient and outpatient care, prescription medications, behavioral health, and more.

In Florida, CHAMPVA-enrolled beneficiaries can tap into inpatient mental health services at CHAMPVA In-house Treatment Initiative (CITI) sites.

If your site doesn’t provide the medical services you need, they may refer you to community providers like Mark Behavioral Health. We accept CHAMPVA to give you mental health care and medical care specific to your needs.

How Does CHAMPVA Insurance Work for Mental Health Recovery?

Enrollment in Florida CHAMPVA starts with proving your relationship to a veteran who meets the qualifying condition of a service-connected disability. This requires filling out a VA form and possibly providing information like a Social Security number.

Once approved, CHAMPVA becomes your payer or secondary payer if you have other insurance, like Medicare.

The CHAMPVA program broadly follows Medicare’s pricing structure but without premiums or copayments. After a $50 annual deductible per person (capped at $100 per family), CHAMPVA pays for 75% of covered services, with CHAMPVA beneficiaries responsible for 25%.

However, there’s no deductible for inpatient mental health care — your only share is the coinsurance based on the allowable amount.

For inpatient mental health treatment, however, pre-authorization is essential. CHAMPVA’s behavioral health contractor reviews the medical necessity criteria, and inpatient admissions must occur at approved facilities.

Does Florida CHAMPVA Cover Inpatient Mental Health Treatment?

Yes. CHAMPVA in Florida covers inpatient mental health services in Florida if actively preauthorized, medically necessary, and delivered in accredited hospitals or residential treatment centers.

Florida hosts multiple VA inpatient and residential programs in such cities as Lake City, Gainesville, Orlando, Miami, Tampa Bay Pines, Jacksonville, and West Palm Beach.

VA health care options include other inpatient programs for co-occurring behavioral health issues, PTSD, substance use, and homelessness.

In community settings, CHAMPVA requires accreditation (by Medicare, TRICARE, TJC, CARF, or COA) and pre-approval for inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Mark Behavioral Health is an approved residential treatment center for CHAMPVA policyholders.

Other Florida Mental Health Programs Covered by CHAMPVA

How Much Do Inpatient Florida Mental Health Programs Cost with CHAMPVA?

CHAMPVA follows a cost-sharing structure similar to Medicare Part D. This structure is comparable to how coinsurance works for private insurance companies.

Specifics of the cost-sharing structure are:

  • You owe an annual deductible of $50 (individual) or $100 (family).
  • Your inpatient cost share is 25% of the allowable amount or nothing if CHAMPVA is the secondary payer.
  • Your out-of-pocket cap is $3,000 per calendar year (and per person for a family plan).
  • You don’t owe a deductible for inpatient mental health stays.
  • Once you or each person of your family hits $3,000 in coinsurance, CHAMPVA covers 100% of the rest.
  • You pay zero to 25% of the cost of prescriptions through OptumRX. If you have to get medication outside the network, you can file for reimbursement.

For example, if you have a hospital bill in Florida of $10,000, you would pay 25% or $2,500. If the cost is more than that, you would not pay more than $3,000 each calendar year.

If Medicare or private insurance is primary, CHAMPVA often covers the remainder of the allowable amount after primary insurance pays.
